Wow, what an awesome story!! I'm a huge fan of Rogue Squadron and Wedge, so this caught my attention right away. And I loved it!
You had me crying right along with the characters, even though I knew that Wedge would make it in the end. I loved the ending, too!
Wonderful job!

Excellent story!!! You captured all the momentum of the X-wings characters...Rogue Squardon and Wedge Antilles can do anything...Retire!! For a while, but he will be back...with the Force, also.

I thought this was great. I am attempting to write a story of Winter and Tycho and your story flowed right along with mine. You captured the friendship between the Rogues and the Wes and Hobbie characters greatly.

For the record, the TFN staff did a wonderful job posting my story and providing me with an artist, Cereth, who really did an awesome job on the cover art. My thanks to everyone. I will include here the original lengthy intro that explains why this fanfic is my Final Flight as well. I guess the staff at TFN thought it was a little long..and it is...
Here it is:

The following is a tale I wrote in the 20th century. That’s right, a long time ago. I wrote it with the hopes of getting it into one of those neat short story books that fledgling writers for LFL cut their teeth in. Of course, the key was/is you had to be published. I set upon that path, of being published, only to have an epiphany of sorts. I discovered that writing in this genre really isn’t for me right now. I mean, if Master Stackpole says he is having trouble selling books in it, what gives me any chance, right? Right, that’s what I said, too. So, what you have here is the ultimate expression of my love for the GFFA, my swan song, if you will. I have had it edited by a real pro, my sister (who really is an editor, BTW) and it has been revised at least three times. I had held onto it all this time because I had held out some small iota of hope that it could see print. Well, that ain’t gonna happen. So here be dragons. Here it is. I dedicate this to all the Star Wars fans out there, all my fellow fanfic writers, and to the pros at the Lucas factory who insist on only taking works from the published and not giving the little people a chance. That’s okay, really, because if it weren’t for their ironclad archaic rules, I wouldn’t have had my epiphany. I guess I should say what that is….I’m going to write historical fiction. There.

Thanks go out to Deinna S for proofing this, to my dear, dear, sister Renegade, who, if not for her efforts, this fanfic wouldn’t be here today. Finally, to my wife, Betsy, because without her love, I’m an empty shell without form.

This is one awesome fic! All of the characters are true to the orginals. I can't get enough of the Rogues, and It's hard to find stuff on them. Thanks for the providing me with another excellent Rogue adventure.

I love Rogue Squadron, and your story gave them the credit they deserve. I didn't think Wedge's Final Flight would come (before reading NJO) but now that it did, I think your ending to his illustrious career was the best there could be.

Wedge -- the omission wasn't deliberate! There must have been a glitch someplace, because the author's note I did include in coding was all I saw.

A great story, Wedge. You helped me remember why I enjoyed the Rogue (and Wraith) Squadron series so much. Your characterization was dead on. With this story, you really did 'fly fast and shoot straight'.
As for getting published (and I hope you do), never give up and grow thick skin. Good luck.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this story. Honestly, I'd say you're one of the best writer's I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Seriously!

It really is too bad this is your 'final flight' accorfing to you comment above, because I could keep on reading your work for ages!

Best of luck with historical fiction! If it's as well written and crafted as this, I can see you being a best-seller in no time!

I don't usually read squadfic- no discredit to the genre, I'm just short of time and other things tend to head the queue- but this one looked to be a little different so I gave it a go. Great work! Good writing and good structure (I was seeing parallels to RotJ in the changes of pace and the general plot arc, if that doesn't sound too pretentious). A nice exploration of the thoughts and feelings involved without going overboard. I like that. It's been worked in well to the story. All in all, a well rounded piece. Don't stop writing!

Wow! Wedge, you really did your name-sake a real honor with this! I've tried to picture Wedge's retirement and you hit it perfectly for me with a final battle and him not getting away clean. Lots of tension and a great touch of emotion from his buddies. Well Done!

Wonderful, extremely well written. I myself am quite disappointed that Lucasfilm and LucasBooks/Del Rey choose not to take on authors that haven't been formally published. Personally, I believe that they should have a Star Wars writing contest, short story submissions and whatnot, and formally publish the one that they find to be the most distinguished. It would certainly draw a lot of takers, and could lead to the publishing of that author's other works (SW or not). But that's just an opinion.

Anyway, the story was wonderful, very well written as I said before. You have Allston's flair for characterization and Stackpole's knack for those little details that catch the reader. Thouroughly, thouroughly impressed. Bravo!

I wish Denis Lawson could read this....He would be extremely proud of the way Wedge evolved! I love the message that Wedge recorded..I cried as I read it! Real tears and everything!!! And the way that all of his friends reacted when he was gone and when returned was priceless...please keep up the excellent work!!! ^_^

I liked the writing style, and the overall story was great, but I feel left out in the cold by the ending. What happened to Donos??? In the Wraith books he was a great character that Allston took a lot of time to develop. In my opinion Wedge would not have hung up the towel until he knew for sure the fate of his fellow Corellian. And I think the VicDestroyer could have had some more information. Who is her captain? Who does she work for? And how did she get outfitted with the powerful shield systems? Just a few things I would have liked to see addressed.

That was great! It was quite short, but that's okay.
Almost everything seems to be consistent with the Star Wars universe, but I'm not sure if Gate is actually dead.
Nice way of creating atmosphere.
The writing style is also quite good too.
Detailed descriptions and all that are quite nice. This seems like part of an actual Star Wars book. Maybe you should give Lucas a call...

Great story!!!

Kept me intrigued right until the very end. At least as good as the Rogue and Wraith books. I do have 2 questions though.. and anyone that can answer please do!

Whatever happened with Myn Donos and Lara Nostil/Gara Petothel/Kirney Slane?

What happens with poor Donos now?

Thanks all, and keep the stories coming!!

This story was AWESOME! As I read it I repeatedly had to rub my eyes to make sure I was looking into a computer screen and not a Bantam published novel. I couldn't believe that this was fan fiction. I actually thought that it was written by Stackpole or Allston, it was that good. Wedge Antilles, Pride of all Corellia, is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite character in all the starwars universe, expanded or otherwise, and seeing him bare all his emotions in a last messege to his family made him all the more real and human in my mind. This is an amazing peice of Star Wars litterature and I would like to see Misters Allston and Stackpole read it, to see what they think of it.

A well done fic! I congradulate the author for keeping it intense and action oriented. Though, Tycho seems to be a bit off-key in the beginning (I didn't really think he was the one to look at other women when he has Winter). Also you left out the fate of Myn Donos (who btw, is one of my favorite characters). Could there be a sequel in the forseeable future? Nicely done and I congradulate you again!

I'm usually a Jedi fan, but I read any SW book. As not onl someone who has read almost every SW book published, but as an amatuer writer as well, I have to say that this was wonderfully, professionally done. The level of depth, quality and usage of language, portrayal of characters, and flawless leave me with no doubts whatsoever that this could definitely be professionally published. Well done! Now all it needs is a way to blend in with the X-wing series...

Excellent, except that Tycho is more reserved (especially devoted to Winter.) Corran, too, I felt was a bit off character...after being in CorSec with Iella, he'd console her! Also, his Jedi senses could help, and I think he might've followed Wes and Hobbie. AND WHAT ABOUT MYN???? Also, if you've ever noticed, there's never any Mr. or Mrs. in Star Wars (besides for in the awful Crystal Star) and that adds to part of the fun. I'm sorry, but if memory serves right, Khe Jeen Slee the Issori was killed in Solo Command. BUT!!! Overall this was wonderful Rogue fun! It was great to see the background to Gavin's ring (NJO) and I could certainly imagine Wedge's "Final Flight" like this. Just wish the Wraiths were involved, I keep on wondering what happened to them. (what a treat to re-meet Face and Piggy in NJO) ...maybe a sequel with them could follow? (with poor EV - ed Myn.)

I really liked "Final Flight". The battle scene was well done, as was behavior of Rogue Squadron. I thought you could have done more with Iella (I'm not sure she would have just sat around waiting for news). But you did everybody else, especially Janson, really well.

NOTICE:

I was doing a proof reading of my paper manuscript and noted that several things were not in the web version...mainly a revised ending with (hopefully) all of the loose ends, including Donos' return, accounted for. I have submitted a request to have the new version posted here. (Sorry it took some time to catch it. My bad.)

The banter between the Rogues was perfect. It was like reading an X-Wing novel! Wedge's predicament was totally heart stopping. His message to his family was so touching! His homecoming was over the top! And the space battle was perfectly described. I felt like iI was in the thick of it! *Grin* Leave it to a Corellian to get out of *that* kind of jam!
