Interesting read. It gives quite a logical picture of Darth Sidious's training. However, the whole prophecy about the chosen one of the dark side, dominating the galaxy seems repetitive

Hey, woo, look, I get to make the second comment! That is so cool! (not). Anyways, good story, although some of Palpatine's training got repetative. I liked the way Shado (sorry, but Shado doesn't feel like a good Sith name: it's too obvious; for lack of a better word.) abused him in order to make him strong. However, sje came across as too weak to be a Sith master, and also too emotional. The ending with his father felt out of place, but the climax in the valley was wonderfully done. A great story, and definately worth the LONG read.

Impressive. Most impressive.
As a life-long Palpatine fan, I've always wondered about his origins as a Sith Lord. In my mind, the story you've created is now what I will consider to be Palpatine's history.
For those of you who are not moved by the depth and complexity of both this story and Palpatine's training as Darth Sidious, you will pay the price for your lack of vision!

I very much enjoyed this story. I'm always curious about "the beginnings" and all the prequel trilogy does is create more questions for us. Thanks for answering some. I'd like to see you develop the relationship between Sidious & Maul, as well! Why does someone brought up to trust only humans pick an alien as an apprentice? One complaint: I was expecting Espaa's father, once he vowed to serve Palpatine, to be a recognized figure from either the original trilogy, or the prequels. I thought that would have been an interesting twist. Perhaps you could incorportate that later!
Overall, I loved the story -- well worth the read!! Thanks!

This is the author's comment. Thanks for the kind words so far, and I'm glad people are enjoying reading this story. I just wanted to respond to a few of the comments. The character of Sate Pestage is not my own creation, but I did make him Palpatine's father. He came from the shooting script of TESB, but his scene was not in the final film. He is a significant character in that he becomes the Grand Vizier of Palpatine. There is some information about him in the New Essential Guide to Characters. His appearance in this story merely sets up his important role in "Dark Emperor", the six-part story that takes place after this one. Dark Emperor may also be found on this archive. I reccommend that people reading this story also read Dark Emperor, because both stories are tightly tied together.
Also, thanks for the criticisms so far. I can always use constructive criticism as feedback.

This is easily one of the best fan fiction stories I've ever read. But it's just something typical from Brendon Wahlberg. Anyone who enjoys this story should immediately download the entire Dark Emperor story and read it. Even though it's a loooong story, you'll be sorry when it ends and wish it went on for a few hundred more pages.
And once you've read Dark Emperor, read all the rest of Brendon's stories, "The Journal of the Whills," and the "Tank Boma" stories. They all tie together and are as well-written as "The Apprentice Sidious".
The only negative about all the stories is that they make just about all of the other fan fiction look very amateurish by comparison.
This sounds like an advertisement for Brendon's work, and I guess in a way it is. His work is that good and I don't hesitate to recommend it all to anyone that will listen and have printed out and given the stories to several friends.
Anyway, stop reading this comment and go download some more stories!

All right, Ancient One, you got me. I have been a fan of Dr. Strange for many years, and could not resist adding in some of the names from the series. In-jokes are part of the fun. Once, in "Ebony and Jade", I put Elton John lyrics in the dialog at the beginning of the story. In all these years, only one person noticed. Hint: it was from the album "Caribou".
So, may the Vishanti smile upon you, and may Doc get his own series again...

Very nice indeed! Its good to see you writing again, I being an old fan from the time you posted "Journal of the Whills" on RASS (before it got the 'M'). (Incidently, I went to read it recently and my copy is all munged up, does it live on the web anywhere?)
I too am a huge fan of the early drafts for Star Wars, and enjoyed the refrence to Ophichi, but I wish you kept the original spelling of Ophuchi.
The characters Jappi Qaff and Zenick Fesi -- are their names from the Lepti Nek lyrics?
Savuud Thimram -- does he look like a "Grey"?
Being torn apart by Force telekenisis... seems very Sith to me.
The Sith Monastary -- inspired by the Volcanic cave in the RotJ early concepts?
The Red sphere in the tomb the Oracle Stone... screams 'Plantir' to me, I don't think it was neccessary to explain Palpatine's prescience.
It was a long read but the climax in the Sith Valley was very pleasing to read.
I agree with another poster about Palpatine's suppossed xeno-bigotry... I think its an inheritance from the EU that needs to be discarded, after all we see him working closley with aliens in the prequels, and as the poster pointed out he had a non-human apprentice in Darth Maul (although I guess it could be argued that Maul is just a human WAY into body-mod).
Overall an excellent work. I am glad to have read it.
Don't let the BOGAN get you down,

FanFic HALL of FAME worthy. First off I wanna say that I hope your not paying too much attention to all those little patient-having readers that are complaining about your stories being too long. GREATNESS TAKES TIME!!! I understand that and feel a sense of loss when I get towards the end of a story as well written as yours. More authors should be like you Brendon. They should take the time to add the layers because what so many readers forget is that it is the time it takes to weave an EPIC tale is the reason why they enjoy it soo much. Without all the backround and build-up it would just be another story. You most definately need to bang on George's door at the ranch, cuz your ideas fit all too well into the existing story. I do agree with one of the other comments though. I think you should write a story based on Palpatine/Maul and include why he would pick an "alien". Just out of curiosity, why do you think Tyrannus could use Force-Lightning and Vader couldn't. I think it was because of Vader's suit having so much electronics that he probably would've fried himself. Anyway, keep them coming and you should definately be getting paid for this. I'd definately buy it.

story was freakin sweet. there was one thing that annoyed me. darth shado. the name sucked and for all you people sayin she was to emotional that was how the sith were supposed to be. its the jedi who keep away from emotions. look at the first lineof the jedi code.
There is no emotion; There is peace.
also the 3rd.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
and there is also a slight continuity problem, palpatine's preceder and master was darth plagus. very good fan fic though.

Excellent story! We know now Sidious was taught by Darth Plagueis, "the Wise", but the funny part? I read your story, changing Shado for Plagueis and everything made sense! "He could manipulate the Force through the Midi-chlorians to create life" said Palpatine to Anakin and that would be explained by your scene in the Alchemy laboratory. "He taught his apprentice everything he knew and then his apprentice killed him in his sleep" well, that is not exactly how it went, but that would explain Shado's emotions had she been Plagueis and how she hesitated in killing him, giving Sidious the advantage. On the other hand, I just don't buy Sidious being Sate Pestage's son. It's a continuity issue. Maybe his brother, but not his son. Palp's already pressing 90 by the time of the OT and Pestage is indeed, the Grand Vizier of the Empire. Plus, Palps would've never shown a soft spot for anyone, not even his own father. Also, Mace being a Padawan at that time? He was about 20 years younger than Palps. Maybe going with Dooku would've been better. But, overall, explaining Sidious' Force sensitivity, his hatred for the Jedi, the way he began his training and conceived his Empire? Impeccable. Keep it up!

I really got into character with Espaa, my family relations and behavior is pretty much similar to what you have described, which brought me to screaming "NOOOO!!! WHHHYYY???" and cursing at Shado for destroying the red cap and waking my parents. of course I never found the words to explain myself. Although, I suddenly remain with the hope that some old woman will take me away. It disturbed me that she was a woman, I really espected Darth Plagueis, so as her name was annoying, I desired her death all along, thanks for providing it, though I think she didn't suffer enough, considering that Sidious really disliked her.
Anyway, I love Palpatine and I love this story much more than many others. I really expect you to write about his relationship with Maul, I always wanted to know how they came together but no story has satisfied me so far, and I see you worthy.
