A special thanks to my wonderfully helpful beta readers, LadyPadme and EmilieDarklighter; and also obaona for creating such fantastic cover art. Couldn't have done it without you, ladies. :)

Well. If I may be so bold as to say that this, while chained with the lowly title of "fanfiction", even surpasses the Luke-Mara writing in the New Jedi Order series.
By far.
Almost on the scale of Zahn (and that's the highest compliment in my arsenal; Zahn, to my mind, is the Jedi Master of Star Wars fiction.) I think you've remained (nearly) true to Zahn's vision and stellar writing style, pacing, and excellent characterization.
One minor, though major underlying, flaw: what explains the subsequent 10 years until The Hand of Thrawn Duology? That's really myhighest compliment, my wanting to fit this in perfectly to the continuity: I think it's that good.
Another point: I almost didn't read this excellent piece because the blurb sounded a bit...trashy and shallow. Your polished writing deserves something equally as elegant.
One more thing: I feel very strongly that most fan fiction is, perhaps, a fun diversion, but low on quality (and usually disappointingly murderous on characterizations, or, at best, stereotypical.) You have real talent. Grow beyond fan fiction!

Gabri, you know what I think about this superlative work. I just loved it. Beta-ing it was a complete pleasure. Your writing style is so fluid and easy to read that it was basically no work for me, and just fun. You have a wonderful way of getting into the characters, especially Mara, and you even made me (a total Han lover) want to be Mara Jade for a little while as I read your lovely story.

Kyp Karrde, I think you're wrong. Gabri_Jade writes better than Zahn. I realize that Zahn created Mara and obviously his characterization of her is the most 'accurate' since she's his; however, his romantic passages are about as exciting to read as cereal labels. Gabri_Jade really captured the essence of the two characters and made the transition for them from friendship to lovers so realistic and believeable and romantic all at the same time.

Wonderful, Gabri!

I REALLY enjoyed this story. It captures the essence and spirit of the two characters at their respected points in the timeline, and illustrates how two people seemingly so wrong for each other in the onset--can be right for each other.

The constant exchange of challenging wit between the two was priceless. "Better make it a double," had me laughing at the end.

Well, all those weaknesses aside, I also have a weakness for missing scenes. Bravo. :)

Not many people have the patience or commitment to make a story all it should be...you have taken a quiet moment in Luke and Mara's time and breathed a plausible life moment for them. Here is the moment of discovery.

wow! thats definitely the best fan fiction i've ever read, and better than a lot of books i've read! your story flowed perfectly and the characterisation was just as stunning. mara's one-liners and defensive anger was brilliant, as was luke's never-ending good nature. mara is my favourite star wars character and it annoys me that so many authors completely get her wrong, or just leave her out for fear of any negative reaction they'll get.At least now i believe that zahn's not the only person who can keep mara in character, and do so with a large amount of style aswell! This is definitely better than fanfiction, and i really hope you write something else soon. well done!

I truly enjoyed your story. A few years ago, I quit reading EU books because I thought the characters were beginning to feel like photocopies of photocopies. I missed reading them and chuckling at jokes only a fan would get, but I thought I'd never bother to read a fanfiction. On a whim I read yours, and wow! I loved it. I loved the way you got Luke perfect, and wove a delightful lovestory that was sentimental without being hokey. Thank you!

Very nice.

The characterizations were dead on, especially in line with Zahn's original work on both of them. As stated above, the romance was much better developed and written than even Zahn himself.

This does mess up the EU continuity a bit, but I guess that's why they added an 'AU' to the description.

Your writing is a credit to the world of SW fanfiction. I don't think I need to encourage you to continue - you'll do that anyway!

Wow, this was wonderful. Luke and Mara are such an unlikely pairing that many authors effectively rewrite their personalities in an effort to make them fit together more easily. This story didn't do that at all. The beautiful thing about Luke and Mara is that they DON'T fit together perfectly-- they have to struggle and fight together the way real people do, but their love is so strong that they can hold out no matter what happens.

Thank you for sharing this with us. It is a truly excellent piece of workmanship.

You capture a lot of what makes their relationship work and what makes it possible. It's really not as unlikely as it seems. They're complementary in every way and are mature enough to value the others' strengths and work out their differences with minimal stress.

Wow. I'm a guy old enough to have seen the Old Trilogy in junior high back in the '70s, but I just recently discovered Luke & Mara by way of Zahn's novels. I wanted more -- and have shied away from the NJO so far.

Though made AU by the later EU novels, I believe this is the finest L/M fic I have found. You capture the characters perfectly and take your time plausibly transitioning a deepening friendship into romance without getting overly florid in the prose, without immediately jumping to "I love you", hopping in the sack right away, or a too quick proposal as as the more simplistic, childish, wish fulfillment stuff does. This is what should have happened after the Thrawn Trilogy, LucasFilm!!

Virtually flawless on all levels.

That said, I know one often hesitates to mess with perfection -- but have you ever considered a follow up that would slowly build things up to them using the "L-word" with each other?

This is one of the few fics I'd have been willing to pay real money for. Thank you for writing it.

The banter was out of this world! The feelings and thoughts each had as their mutual discovery of what they meant to each other was totally believable. I loved Journey of Discovery Trilogy by Jedi2B for all these reasons, and for an even bigger one: being able to show Mara be her strong, complex, dangerous self and yet soft and vulnerable. I get the totally grand impression of the marvelous gift and honor she's giving to Luke by letting him bring out that side of her. I also see that she's the only woman worthy of someone so warm and full of conviction and drive as he is--being the founder of a New Jedi Order would necissitate being a person others would willingly follow. But he's never full of himself or pushy with people. He retains that sweet gentleness without being gullible. You captured this perfectly. One downer though: the post NJO has a lot to live up to in the mush department. *laugh*

This was a great story especially since it's the first I've read here. I think Luke and Mara make a great couple and it shows here. The two of them shouldn't care what others think about their relationship the only people who should care is them. Leia would approve of them being together and Mara is fairly close to being family any way. This a start to what will be a great relationship between Luke and Mara.

Well, I normally steer away from romance, but I'm glad I read this one! It was cute and funny and sweet and the banter really made me laugh!

I've never really liked Mara Jade, especially once she started getting paired with Luke (there were virtually zero hints of that in the Thrawn trilogy), but after reading this I don't feel so much dislike for her character. You did an excellent job - a much better one even than Zahn, I think - of showing her multiple facets: the Mara hindered by her past, the one trying to live the present, and the one she might possibly become in the future. Reading this makes the Luke/Mara pairing seem much more understandable.

Great job with Luke, too. I love the way you flavour his gentle farmboy innocence with a dash of cultured gallantry.

I'd also like to thank you for keeping this fic clean and sweet, with a minimum of sexual references. Despite what the majority of 'romance' is nowadays, some people still appreciate good old-fashioned gentlemanly behaviour!

One thing I might say is that Leia seemed a tad out-of-character - I know it's probably not too great of a reach to imagine her trying to do some matchmaking, but it doen'st sound quite like her. It does make for a great start to a storyline, though!

Thanks for writing this; it was great and I really truly enjoyed it!
