Nice!

I first read this FanFic on the Vaders Mask website, and I'm happy to see it finally archived! I like the emotion throughout the story, and it's interesting to see that most of it is anger. It made me think about what would have happened if Vader had tried to turn Leia instead of Luke...Maybe I'll write that next lol :).

Absolutely shattering. It gets far deeper into Anakin/Vader's head than any official work I've read. I've already been thinking that I won't be able to make it through Ep. II and Ep. III without bawling my eyes out, and reading this pretty much proved it. Star Wars has spoken to me not as a story about battles, but as a story about broken hearts. No two hearts in all of Star Wars are more broken than Anakin's and Padme's.

This may be the finest piece of Star Wars fan fiction around. It shows just how truly great on-line writing can be. This is a very compelling concept and it's executed wonderfully.

Only the very best of stories can be both as black as midnight and as light as noon, with angst and humor and most of all, very real characters.

This is spectacular, FernWithy. Absolutely spectacular. The development of the characters of both Leia and Vader is so wonderful, and adds to the films so much. That is the true goal of such an excellent story-- matching the films in all their glory and adding to them to make them greater.

Phenomenal. Astounding. Riveting. Profound. But I'll stop while I'm ahead and say no more, just go off and cry away the overwhelming emotions communicated by this piece.

This is definitely one of the greatest fictions I have read. As Darth Pipes said, herein lies the beauty of online-writing. That the fic is about two of my favorite characters is part of why I loved it, but more than that, it was written in such a way you were just drawn into it.

I too read this on Vader's Mask and was very impressed. I was really happy to see it here. You have such a way with words FernWithy, and I truly loved reading your story. Darth Vader is my favorite character from any movie or book. It was great to read a story that explored Vader's thoughts, not only about his turn to the dark side, but about what he was like as Anakin Skywalker. A job well done indeed!

Hi! I've really enjoyed your fic, from the begining to the end. I like your writing stile (I can sense maybe it's a little stephen king-ish?), and the plot is great, Leia is a very strong character that is somehow forgotten in a lot of works, I really don't know why. Its hard to begin to explain how much I admire this piece. I loved Vader having facial expressions behind his mask that only he and us dear readers were aware of. The duality of Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader was played very well. I also loved the pieces of trivia of the films that this story addressed. Just WHY Leia is so cool when she sees Vader aboard the Tantive IV in the begining of Episode IV... her eagerness to commandeer a speeder bike on Endor... Piett's early career dealing with Vader.

The handmaiden at the funeral -- Padme?

I'm sure I am forgetting something. Wonderful piece! I love it.

I could fell the conflict in Vader, just as Luke did.

A wonderful piece of writing.

I loved the story. At first I wondered where you were going with the Leia/Vader relationship, but very skillful execution of that dynamic. As others are asking/assuming, was that Padme at the funeral pyre? On one level I don't believe that it could be as I feel that Ani/Vader would not allow her to be held captive, especially after what happened to his mother in Ep.II. However, on another level I can see how it would make sense for Palpatine to have her to use against Vader possibly "rebel"ling. As all good stories should, this leaves many things to the individual interpretation and contemplation.

A couple answers to questions. Yeah, my style is pretty influenced by the venerable Mr. King. I read him a lot; it seeps in. Thank heaven.

The handmaiden... I like her being Padme, so she's Padme to me. If you don't like her being Padme, she can be any handmaiden that you like. Of course, that would mess up a few of my other fics, but c'est la vie. In FH as a standalone, it can go either way.

Eeeii.. this is a truly wonderful piece, FernWithy; it really made me think [every couple paragraphs or so, it seemed my mind was drifting from the text on the screen to make firm connections from what you wrote here, to the rest of the Star Wars universe. It fits rather well, and explains quite a lot, too!]. This is an extremely well written piece of fan fiction.. @.@
Though, reading the other comments; I find it difficult for the handmaiden to have been Padme [my random option], because then, after the victory in RofJ, would they not have released her; found some trace of her? In the "official" books that continue the plot, they do not [heck they hardly even mention her, probably due to the fact that she was a nameless, faceless character at the time].. which is a shame. It was certainly make an interesting concept to contemplate. But; every reader to his or her own interpretation.

Marvelous story. I'd be lucky to find another one quite this deep to read next. =]

I never was quite able to get into the whole fan fic thing, but your story pulled me in. I couldn't stop reading it, the plot and the relationships described were amazing. You are a very talented writer. I did have one problem with your story, though. I believe you mentioned that Leia would never return to Alderaan, but I recall something that described a meeting she had on Alderaan with her father shortly before A New Hope. I think it was mentioned in one of the journals or the radio drama. Otherwise I absolutely loved your story, and you helped me realize that some fan fic is worth reading. Good job.

i truely loved this story! i was emotionally pulled in love, then hate, then back to love again. i think i was just as confused about vader as leia was! lol i liked seeing this side of vader, how it is only reserved for a select few people. i liked him asking her to join him even though he knew it was going to be a goodbye. i was surprised at how brutal leia was at the end, going striaght for his deepest fears. but it explains his feelings in ANH. although he didn't kill leia (in ANH) perhaps even though he was mad, maybe not as much, he still cared?

It's four in the morning; 4:23 AM, to be exact. I started reading your story last night, and I couldn't put it down. It was so...moving, tear-jerking, awe-inspiring... words fail me, at least the right ones. Even though I don't know enough to be classified as a Star Wars guru, I always knew that there was something more to Vader. I could never make myself fear him, even before I knew that he was just the embodiment of the hate that handsome, sweet Ani carried around with him. I have one tiny comment though - It would have been that much more powerful if Ani had started to think "Padme" instead of Amidala, you know? But far be it from me to criticize a genius! Keep up the good work! :p

You portray Leia and Vader so well-- their interactions seem to stir up emotions when I read, and Leia and Vader seemd to just go together in this story. And the ending... the ending was excellent! It leads right into ANH quite smoothly.
I've seen many good authors "retire" from writing fan fic because they were getting "too old" or they lost interest in Star Wars-- I hope that doesn't happen to you ;)

This is one of the best and most powerful works of fan fiction I have read. I, and others, obviously find the idea of Vader and Leia knowing each other before ANH most interesting and appealing, and you are able to create a masterpiece to satisfy our curiosity. The characters were creatively and well drawn out; the dialogue was true to the character of those present in the regular saga. I must say, it does seem that every one of the Star Wars fics that I read that's on the long side is quite the story indeed.

And your story falls under that category as well. What a mixture of emotions! I could hardly believe that I was reading such an excellent piece of work.

Though, I must admit, the ending confused me entirely. I'm still not sure if what she was doing, with the trunk and all, was real or still a part of her dream. When you wrote that it was never opened, does this mean that she remained in there? If so, does that mean that it caused her death? So many questions left unanswered, though I still enjoyed the story.

This story is AWESOME! I'm a bit dissapointed that Leia's friendship with Vader didn't continue, but I can see how it would heavily contradict episode 4 if it did. Alas, some things that should be are not to be..... I can see Leia becoming good friends with her father after she too joins the Force. I wonder if all Jedi who join the force can come back like Obi-Wan did in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi..... I can see Anakin like 5000 years after he dies instructing the new Jedi on Yavin 4. Or maybe by then they'll have moved back to the Jedi Temple and renovated it or moved somewhere else..... *gets a VERY weird image of Winnie The Pooh with a light blue light saber and a Jedi cloak/shawl/robe* I wonder where that image came from..... it was very nice to see that in many places, specifically the Star Wars universe some things never change..... namely, Vader's passion for mechanics, as shown by him tweaking Leia's speeder bike..... he could probably give it a working hyper drive.....

Live Long and Prosper,

Samauri~Knight

P.S.

Please don't shoot me..... Star Trek rocks! Without Star Trek Star Wars might be very different..... It IS possible to like both Star Trek and Star Wars..... *points to self as an example* *points to two friends as another example* May the Force Be with You

This story was absolutely amazing. It is one the best Star Wars stories I have ever read, and that is including official works. I could see this becoming a movie... the emotion and the story telling style of the movies is all there. I felt bad at the end that their friendship ended... it seemed so real and unique, that I felt they both lost someone very close. I want to see a sequel where we see how Vader and Leia think of each other again when they reunite in A New Hope, or how Leia really feels when she finds out Vader was indeed her natural father. In any event, this was an awesome story, and keep writing!

I may be like breaking a mega unspoken rule here, but I have to do this.

The little refrences that I heard in here are as follows:

The tall lanky amphibian type creature she saw at the market (Dissen be a no brainer, totally ad).

The story 3PO was telling was like Ep. 1. Only faerie tale style.

And that freakin loser talked about a sorry farmboy from ine that they called 'Wormie'.

There may have been more, but this is all I saw. Loved the fic. Four and five tenticals up!! I know, so lame. MTFBWYD (may the force be with you dudes).

So, I'm a few years after the fact here, but this is the first piece of Star Wars fanfiction I've ever read. You've set a startling precedent. I only hope I can find other fics that are half this good. As someone deep into Harry Potter fandom, I know how hard good fics are to find. Thanks for a lovely story and a great first experience.

Very good story. I enjoyed watching the two characters develop, and could almost feel the bond they shared and the angst they went through as they found themselves traveling different paths. Although Breha was Bail's wife rather than Saché, the story also flowed very well with Star Wars cannon. I could have seen all this happening just before the start of A New Hope.

this was beautifully written. i loved the relationship btw Vader & Leia. I like how she rides the speeder bike and all the conversations they have. I was upset when he killed her adoptive mother. I liked the whole dynamic with Vader/Anakin and how he never forgot Padme. Ugh I want more lol
