Very nice! I love the way you integrated the prequel trilogy into this story to shed light on the past and give Luke the strength that the characters in that trilogy have.

The dreams were also very interesting, and very well executed. Good job!

I don't know if it is the aniticipation of EP 2 or just a surge in pure talent but the FanFics of late have been absolutely incredible. I usually scan and skim through the latest publications and get a so-so/okay feeling about what I read. But your work here is brilliant. If I had my thesaurus close I would dig through and give you a more original adjective but just plain ol' brilliant will. Keep writing, thanks

Words cannot summerize the visions i have been shown in your words. I felt as if Padme where speaking to me, and she was my mother forcing me to do my duty. I think you have really put yourself in the role of Luke Skywalker, and felt his fears, his heart, and most of all his destiny. I tip my hat to you,, Good Job! May The Force Be With You.
P.S. Looking forward to more .

Viari Skywalker's Comments:

Thanks to all of you for your kind words!

Lord Malice: If it seemed like I was really putting myself in Luke's position, that's probably because of all the times I've watched the movies. Every time Luke and Vader are in a scene together, I can't take my eyes off it becuase I'm engrossed in it, and I'm imagining what both men are thinking. (Vader is my favorite character by the way.) When Luke learns that Vader is his father, I can feel the pain and the dreaded realization of the truth. When Luke dying from the Emperor's Force-lightning, I feel the conflict in Vader rising up and the triumph as he becomes a Anakin -- a Jedi Knight -- once again. So it might not have as much to do with writing skills as it does with my love for this truly awesome saga.

Thank you for the comments!

May the Force be with you!

Only thing I did not like was the fact that Luke lost only his HAND to Vader, not the lower part of the arm. Only the hand. Other than that glaring problem, the story was very cool. I liked it a lot.

Viari, this story was wonderful! It made me cry!

The agony that Luke faced after the events on Bespin were heartwrenching! The poor boy was just heartbroken! But having Leia there, serving as a source of light, focused Luke and pulled him away from the frightening monsters of the dark.

The scene with Luke and Padme was so bittersweet! He had only the vaguest memories of her, along with the few words that Leia used to describe her. Then, deep within his soul, he was able to truly see her for the first time. She was able to instill something precious within him, or at least, help him to find it. Hope. Hope that his father could be redeemed.

And those defiant words at the end! I was yelling, "GO LUKIE! YOU TELL HIM!" :)

Once again, this story was absolutely beautiful! I hope to see more from you!

I thought that "You are a fool, my son" line was a bit off, too. Vader, I don't think, would insult Luke that way.
BUT there is a line in the ROJ novel Vader where Vader told Luke: "Someone has filled your head with foolish ideas." So I guess it could work.
In any event, I loved this fic!

Awesome, awesome story. The only thing I noticed that was really and truly off was Luke meeting Padme, because I think Luke would have made a reference to her in an attempt to pull Vader away from the Dark Side at the climax of ROTJ. Other than that, great story!

Author: Viari Skywalker  (signed)
Date posted: 11/12/2002 5:07:55 PM
Viari Skywalker's Comments:

Thanks Nova! Yeah, I can't quite imagine this moment happening in ROTJ, so I guess you could kind of count this as AU, but I just get so frustrated that Luke has not learned about his mother at all really in the EU. So I thought maybe a shadowy encounter with his mother - which revealed little information, only that she had known Anakin before his fall - might satisfy my desire. I'm glad you like it though. It was my first attempt at fanfic, and hopefully my work to come will be even better! MTFBWY!

Very nicely written. Except for the arm/hand mixup (for the record, Luke's hand was cut off at the wrist, not "just below the elbow"), this had the ring and feel of the actual films. You wove in the movie scenes seamlessly, and the dream sequences were very vivid and clear.

Viari Skywalker's Comments:

Hey all, thanks again for the wonderful comments! I really appreciate them.

I don't claim to know every detail, but I am pretty certain that Luke's arm was cut off not far below the elbow. That scene is one of my favorites, and I've watched TESB so many times. I wanted to be certain that I was accurate with the movies when I wrote this, and from watching the movie, it appears to me that it is somewhere between his wrist and elbow. Maybe my words were misleading in the story...I realize he didn't have that much cut off, but then again, I don't believe it was merely his wrist. Just wanted to get it out in the open what my view is, so as to avoid future questions on why I chose that description. :-D

Well, I guess I'm gonna have to watch TESB again and make sure! :-P Who knows, I don't want to get into a huge discussion here. I'm just glad you all enjoyed the story. So thanks!

Favorite part? Luke's terror, his reaction to the catastrophic losses- both physical, mental, and spiritual - of ESB...the touch of him meeting Anakin was masterful.

Reminded me poignantly of "I Don't Like Sand", the masterful comic story in theforce.net comic section (just submitted by D.B. on August.)

Kudos!

Really, really good story. Just a comment about the hand thing that seems to be a bit of a contentious issue...In my opinion, it was at the wrist - or maybe just a little further up. It's a bit hard to see exactly where in TESB, but Luke's definitely got most of his forearm still there. Not that it really matters. It was a great story.

Author: Viari Skywalker  (signed)
Date posted: 2/6/2004 4:23:20 PM
Viari Skywalker's Comments:

Thanks! Ok, I was watching ESB recently, (the whole "what exactly did Luke get sliced off" was one of the motivating factors behind editing and updating this fic in the firts place,) and the whole forearm thing -- at least for me -- comes from the scene at the very end where 2-1B is attaching Luke's new bionic limb. We see him poking Luke's hand, then we see a shot of Luke closing the lid that is located roughly 3 inches from his wrist. Clearly that means part of his forearm must have been lost, or after losing his hand Luke had to have more removed before he could get a replacement. Either way, from watching the last scene of ESB, I concluded that it was a little bit more than the wrist that he lost.

Whew! Anyway folks, that's just my take. I know it doesn't affect the story very much, but I hate to make big continuity errors. :P :) Thanks for bearing with me through that! And thanks again!

Representing the good that was still in him and Luke finding in himself to fight his own battles.. to make his own destiny... 2 very good themes and a great tie in...

An excellent story, it really fills in the thoughts that everyone knew Luke had, but never got shown on screen.

To add some more fuel to the "what all got cut off" - if you watch the sequence where Luke is falling down the shaft in Cloud City, as he is drifting into the refuse shaft there is a good shot of him with both arms up. You can clearly see that there is more than just his hand missing from his right side. Also, as was already said, the scene at the end with Too-Onebee clearly shows the mechanical "nerves" in the middle of his forearm.

Again, an awesome story.

You really are a Force-inspired writer and I think you could go somewhere with it. As for the whole "where-did-Luke-get-cut" deal, I agree with you and a couple others, it was a couple inches above his wrist. Anyway I need to go now, I have to look up some more of your stories, if there are any, that is....
